En 2004, l'annonce est faite de la reformation des Pixies pour une tournée…

Le groupe mythique est fondé à Boston 1986 par Charles Thompson (Black Francis : guitare, chant) et son compagnon de chambrée Joey Santiago (guitare). Kim Deal et David Lovering (drum) sont recrutés par petite annonce. C’est Joey Santagio qui choisit le nom Pixies, au pif dans le dictionnaire ! Le groupe enregistre la démo The purple tape puis, en 1987, le maxi Come on pilgrim. Suit l'album Surfer rosa produit par Steve Albini, qui va cartonner un peu partout...

En 1993, les Pixies se séparent. Black Francis part en solo sous le nom de Frank Black. Kim Deal rejoint les Breeders. Joey Santiago et Dave Lovering fondent The Martinis.
